About the Program

The Farmers’ Market and Local Food Promotion Program

  • Coordinates weekly roadside produce stands in partnership with local farmers to increase access to locally grown produce in food insecure communities.
  • Partners monthly with local farmers and vendors to hold farmers markets to increase access to healthy, affordable, and organic foods.
  • Implements community gardens in Lexington and Richland counties and offers gardening and growing practices education to community residents.
  • Offers healthy cooking and nutrition classes to community residents.
  • Provides work, intern, and volunteer opportunities for the community to learn and grow.

The program provides nutrition education, share/highlight food entrepreneurship opportunities & career paths, healthy cooking classes, and providing gardening and growing practices and education to youth, teens, and adults. The program’s goal coincides with the USDA’s goal of providing all Americans access to a safe, nutritious, and secure food supply. This project also provides an opportunity for the community to work together and support healthy community relationships.
